Milena is a popular female given name of Slavic origin derived from word "mil" meaning "gracious", or, alternatively, "dear". It is the feminine form of the male name Milan. It is quite popular in most of the former Yugoslavian republics, such as Serbia, Republic of Macedonia, and Slovenia, and in other Slavic countries such as Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, and to a lesser extent Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, and even in Colombia, Brazil, Dominican Republic and Italy.
Czech: from a short form of various compound names containing the element mil grace, favour (cf. Miles). The name is now fairly common in Italy, where it is often assumed to be a contraction of Maria + Elena. In fact it was little known before 1900, when King Victor Emmanuel III married Elena of Montenegro, whose mother was called Milena.
