History and Origin
Ninel is a feminine personal name. It was formed by the reverse reading of the surname of the founder of the Soviet state V. I. Lenin.
Ninel is one of the most commonly used feminine names of "ideological sound" (see Names of Soviet origin). The name in Russian language and culture took longer than many other Soviet neologisms, to which there was only a brief surge of interest in the 1920s and early 1930s; In the "Dictionary of Russian Personal Names" by N. A. Petrovsky, published in 1966, it was noted that the name came into use due to its good sound. The success of the sound combination that forms the name, as well as the embedding of the new name in a number of already existing names (cf. Nina, Nelly) allowed it to easily enter into active use.
Russian: modern coinage adopted by patriotic Soviet citizens, representing Lenin spelled backwards (cf. Vladilen).
Pet form: Nelya.
