History and Origin
Nora or Norah is an English and Irish feminine given name. It is derived from the English-Norman name Honoria or Honora, which in turn takes its roots from the Latin word Honor.
It is also an abbreviated form of the name Eleanor (Elinor).
In addition, in Arabic there is a name Nurah (Arabic: نورة), meaning "light".
English, Irish, Scottish and Scandinavian: short form of names such as Eleonara (see Eleanor), Honora (see Honour), and Leonora. Although these are not Gaelic in origin, Nora (Gaelic Nóra) was particularly associated with Ireland at one time. In the Scottish Highlands it is used as a feminine form of Norman. In Scandinavia the name is known particularly as that borne by the heroine of Henrik Ibsen's play A Doll's House.
