History and Origin
Oktyabrina is a female Russian personal name that arose in the first years of Soviet power - in honor of the October Revolution, the celebration of the anniversaries of which was the main Soviet holiday.
Like many other names of Soviet origin, the name Oktyabrina arose in the 1920s, during the period of a unique phenomenon in the history of Russian anthroponymy, later called the "anthroponymic explosion". In the wake of revolutionary changes, there was an unprecedented expansion of the Russian name system, including at the expense of neologisms. The name Oktyabrina is formed according to the model of traditional female Russian personal names with the finale -[ina] (cf. Antonina, Valentina, Irina, Marina). The basis was the word "October", which in the Soviet years received new semantic meanings and connotations associated with the revolution. "October" (with a capital letter), "Great October" or "Red October" called the October Revolution proper and the celebration of its anniversaries; the proletarian revolution, the revolutionary coup in general, was also called "October".
The name Oktyabrina has three related male names: this pair is Oktyabrin, as well as October and Octobrist.
The frequency of the name was low even in the years of greatest fascination with new names (1920s-1930s); the name later effectively fell into disuse. According to information published by Y. F. Gavryuchenkov, in St. Petersburg at the beginning of 2001 there lived 331 carriers of the name Oktyabrin - this is the highest value in the city among the "names of ideological sound". They were all born between 1923 and 1965; the peak of naming occurred in 1925-1931.
The name of the main character, "Oktyabrina", is given to the story of R. E. Oblonskaya (1957).
Russian: name adopted in the Soviet period, in commemoration of the October Revolution of 1917 which brought the Bolsheviks to power.
