History and Origin
English: one of the earliest and most successful of the names coined during the 19th century from vocabulary words denoting plants, no doubt partly because an olive branch has been a symbol of peace since biblical times. The Latinate form Oliva was used as a given name in medieval times, but dropped out of use in the English-speaking world after its pronunciation became indistinguishable from that of the male name Oliver.
