History and Origin
Italian: from Greek Orpheus, the name in classical mythology of a Thracian musician whose playing on the lyre was so beautiful that he charmed Nature itself. After his wife Eurydice died, he descended in search of her to the underworld, and charmed Hades, the king of the underworld, into allowing him to take her back to the world of the living, on condition that he should not look at her until they had regained the sunlight. He lost her again, because he looked back to check that she was behind him. The name is of very uncertain derivation, and it seems likely that the legend originally concerned a pre-Greek divinity of the natural world.
