History and Origin
French: from Latin Pontius, originally a family name of uncertain origin. It is probably derived from an Italic dialectal word for ‘five’, and so is ultimately a doublet of Quintus and Pompeo. In spite of its unfortunate association with Pontius Pilate, the Roman procurator of Judea who ordered the crucifixion of Jesus, it came to be used occasionally as a given name in honour of the cult of St Pons of Cimiez (d. 258).
Cognates: Italian: Ponzio. Spanish: Poncio. Catalan: Ponç.
