History and Origin
According to the Vedānta doctrine, prakriti is the basic matter of which the universe is composed. It is formed by three gunas (qualities), which are:
- satua (purity, balance, peace, spirituality, truth, harmony).
- stripes (strength, movement, action, aggressiveness, passion, activity) and
- tamas (inertia, rest, lethargy, indifference).
The god Krishna in the Bhagavad-gita describes prakriti as a type of "energy" inferior to the atma (the souls) and Paramatma (the supreme soul, God).
Prakriti also means nature. Nature can be described as an environment. It can also be used to denote the feminine (as a counterpart of the purusha, masculine).
