French: from Latin Rēmigius, a derivative of rēmex (genitive rēmigis) oarsman (from rēmus oar + agere to ply, work). The name was borne by a 6th-century bishop of Rheims who was responsible for the conversion and baptism of. Clovis, king of the Franks, and also by an 8th-century bishop of Rouen, the latter being an illegitimate son of King Charles Martel (grandfather of Charlemagne). There has been some confusion with the name Remedius (from Latin (re)medēre to heal; cf. Remedios), borne by an early bishop of Gap in the French Alps.
