History and Origin
Sebastian is a masculine given name of Greek origin. It is very likely that it comes from the Greek word σεβαστεύω (sebastéuo), derived in turn from the verb σεβάζω (sebazo) whose meaning is 'to revere, to honor'. The Greek adjective σεβαστιάς (sevastiás), feminine σεβαστή (sevastí) was used as the equivalent of the Latin Augustus (a) in Roman times. In the modern Greek language, the adjective σεβαστός (sevastós) translates as 'King of the universe' or 'The humble ruler'.
In the Byzantine Empire there was also the title of σεβαστοκράτωρ (sevastokrátor) given to certain brothers and friends of the emperor.
