Simeon, or Shimon is a given name, from the Hebrew שמעון (Biblical Šimʿon, Tiberian Šimʿôn). In Greek, it is written Συμεών, hence the Latinized spelling Symeon.
Biblical: from Hebrew, meaning ‘hearkening’. It is borne by several Old and New Testament characters, rendered in the Authorized Version variously as Shimeon, Simeon, and Simon. In the New Testament, it is the spelling used for the man who blessed the infant Christ (Luke 2: 25).
