Scottish (Highland): from the Old Norse personal name Sumarlíòr, probably originally a byname meaning ‘summer traveller’. This was the name of the founder of the powerful and widespread Clan Macdonald, Lords of the Isles from the 12th to the 15th century, and it is still occasionally bestowed on Macdonalds and members of septs of the various branches of the clan. The Somerled in question was Lord of Argyll from about 1130 to 1164. The clan actually takes its name from his grandson.
Variants: Summerlad (altered by folk etymology); Somhairle (Gaelic form, also used in Ireland; Anglicized as Sorley).
