History and Origin
Susanna is a feminine first name. It is not very common in the USA, and is found there predominantly among the American Jewish community. It is the name of at least two women in the Bible. It is often spelled Susannah, although Susanna is the original spelling. It is derived from Σουσάννα (Sousanna), the Greek form of the Hebrew שושנה Shoshannah, meaning lily (from Lilium family). سوسن (Susan) is the Persian spelling of this name. The spelling Susanna is used in Sweden, Italy, the Netherlands and Finland, as well as in the English-speaking world. The spelling Zuzana is used in Czech Republic and Slovakia and spelling Zsuzsanna in Hungary. In Poland it is Zuzanna. Even though very uncommon, it is also spelled Susana in Spain and Portugal, where it is more common.
The original Hebrew form Shoshana, from which all the above are ultimately derived, is still commonly used in contemporary Israel, often shortened to "Shosh" or "Shoshi".
New Testament form (Luke 8: 3) of the Hebrew name Shoshana (from shoshan lily, in modern Hebrew also ‘rose’). The name is also spelled Susannah, a transliteration used in the Old Testament. The tale of Susannah, wife of Joachim, and the elders who falsely accused her of adultery, is to be found in the apocryphal book that bears her name, and was popular in the Middle Ages and later.
Variant: Suzanna.
Cognates: English: Susan. Scottish Gaelic: Siùsan, Siùsaidh. French: Suzanne. German: Susanne. Polish: Zuzanna. Czech: Zuzana. Hungarian: Zsuzsanna.
Short form: Scandinavian: Sanna.
