History and Origin
Italian and Spanish: from Greek Telesphoros, a compound derived from telos end, completion + pherein to bring, bear. This was originally an epithet of Zeus or of the personified abstraction, Justice. Later it came to be understood as the name of an independent deity concerned with health, a companion of Aesculapius and Hygiea. In the Late Greek period it was used as a personal name, and in early Christian times it was borne by an early pope who was martyred under Hadrian in 136; he was a Calabrian Greek by origin.
Cognate: French: Télésphore (rare).
