History and Origin
Spanish: from the Greek name Thyrsos. A thyrsos was a characteristic vine-decked staff carried by devotees of the god Dionysus; the word seems to have been introduced, together with the cult of Dionysus, from the Orient. St Thyrsos was martyred at Apollonia in Phrygia in c.251, together with Lucius and Kallinikos. Their relics were brought to Spain in the early Middle Ages, and Thyrsos was honoured with a full office in the Mozarabic liturgy.
