History and Origin
Vega is a woman's name that has a Christian religious origin, for the Marian invocation of the Virgen de la Vega, venerated in many localities of Spain such as Salamanca, where she is patron saint of the city, Benavente (Zamora), Piedrahita (Ávila) and Haro (La Rioja). Etymologically 'vega' comes from 'vaica', a pre-Roman word with the same meaning: flat and fertile extension, humid, commonly a humanized space belonging to a community.
The same word is used as a surname, alone or with the formula 'de Vega' or 'de la Vega'.
The name Vega has gone from its original form 'María de la Vega' to being used by itself, losing its religious meaning. Since that more transparent use (more neutral or secular) some relate the term to the star Vega, the brightest in the constellation of the Lyre. With that usage the origin of the word is Wega (later Vega), a transliteration of the Arabic word wāqi', meaning "who falls", in the phrase النسر الواقع an-nasr al-wāqi', "the eagle that falls".
It is with this meaning that it appears more frequently each time in countries other than Spain, such as the United States.
