History and Origin
Viola is a feminine given name, a variant of the given name Violet.
English, Italian, and Scandinavian: from Latin viōla violet. The name is relatively common in Italy and was used by Shakespeare in Twelfth Night (where most of the characters have Italianate names). However, in England it seems to have been used in modern times mainly as a result of its association with the somewhat larger flower so called in English (a single-coloured pansy).
