History and Origin
Vladimir (Russian Cyrillic: Влади́мир Russian pronunciation: [vlɐˈdʲimʲɪr], Old Church Slavonic: Владимѣръ) is a male Slavic given name of Church Slavonic and Old Slavic origin, now widespread throughout all Slavic nations. It is also a common name in former Soviet non-Slavic countries where Christianity is practised, such as Armenia.
Russian: from an old Slavonic personal name composed of the elements volod rule (cognate with Germanic wald) + meri great, famous (see Casimir). The stress is on the second syllable. St Vladimir (956–1015) was Great Prince of Kievan Russia and the father of Sts Boris and St Gleb; he is honoured as the ruler, ‘equal to the apostles’, who brought Russia into the Christian Church. See also Vadim.

Pet forms: Russian: Volodya, Volya.
Feminine forms: Russian: Vladimira. Czech: Vladimíra.
