Árpad is a masculine given name of Hungarian origin, the meaning of which is uncertain, but is estimated to derive from the Hungarian "árpa", meaning wheat (Hordeum vulgare). In medieval times it was Grand Prince Árpad, who led his Hungarian army from Asia to Europe, where the nation settled in the present location of Hungary in 896.

Hungarian: apparently from a diminutive of the vocabulary word árpa seed, barleycorn. It was the name of the Magyar chieftain who first conquered the territory that is modern Hungary, in the late 9th century, and who led his people to settle there. He is regarded as a national hero in Hungary, and many children are named after him.
