Ariaman is one of the oldest Vedic gods (devas). He is the third son of the goddess Aditi, so he is known as one of the Aditias (solar deities).

He is the chief of the pitris (deceased ancestors, who according to the Rig-veda were to be worshipped) and of the Milky Way (called in Sanskrit aryamṇáḥ panthah, 'the path of Ariaman').

It is commonly invoked along with the deities Varuna and Mithras, also with Bhaga, Brijás Pati, and others.

In the Rig-veda (the oldest text in India, from the middle of the second millennium BC.C.) there are two great groups of gods, the devas and the asuras. Unlike the Puranic texts (which began to be composed in the third century AD.C.) and in the Hindu religion, the asuras had not yet been demonized. Ariaman in the Rig-Veda is an asura, as is Mithras and Varuna. Aditi is the mother of the asuras, led by Varuna and Mithras.

At present, marriage vows in Hinduism are administered with an invocation for Ariaman to witness the event.
