Ava is a feminine given name in the English and in other languages. Its recent popularity is ultimately due to a number of celebrity babies of the 1990s, who were ultimately named after American actress Ava Gardner (who had died in 1990).

English: of uncertain origin, probably Germanic, from a short form of various female compound names containing the element av (cf. Avis). St Ava or Avia was a 9th-century abbess of Dinart in Hainault and a member of the Frankish royal family. However, evidence for its use between the early Middle Ages and the mid-20th century is lacking, and it may be a modern invention. Its recent popularity is largely due to the film actress Ava Gardner (1922–90).
