Beto as a first name is different than Beto as a surname. In Spanish, Beto is often a short or nickname for Roberto or Robert - for example Texas Congressman Robert "Beto" O'Rourke. "Beto" may also be used as slang. Those uses are not addressed here, but instead "Beto" is discussed as a German surname. As a surname, Beto derives from the German Bütow, which traces to two different towns of the same name, one in Germany and one in Poland (Pomeranian area). About 27% of Pomerania is in Germany and 73% in Poland, The original name may have come from a man named Byt. An earlier Latin spelling may have been Bitom. (Kashubian: Bëtowò - may be its own language or could be considered a dialect of Polish.) In the 14th century, the [Polish] town was renamed "Butow" or Bütow. Under Polish control, Butow became spelled as "Bytów." When it was under Prussian/German control it was spelled Bütow. At the end of World War II, it reverted to being Bytów, Poland and its German residents expelled. There is also a "Bütow" that is a municipality in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Bytów, Poland and Bütow, Germany are about 278 miles apart by road. It has been reported that Butow/Bytow has Slavic origins. When Germans, or at least those of German blood, with the name of "Butow" immigrated to the United States, mostly after 1840, the surname was often "Americanized." Alternate spellings of the surname "Beto" include Butow, Buetow, Beutow, Beto, Bitow, and Batow. There may be others. In the United States, while there are Bütow descendants throughout the country, the name, or its variants, is found most often in Minnesota and Wisconsin. If I find the meaning of the name Bütow, I will share that. Perhaps others, particularly German citizens, may know.
