In the epic text Mahabharata, Bhima was the second of the Pandava brothers.

  • bhīma, in the AITS system (International Sanskrit Transliteration Alphabet).
  • भीम, in Devanagari script.

He was the son of Queen Kunti with the god Vaiu, but like his other brothers (actually sons of the gods Dharma, Indra and the two Ashuin) King Pandu recognized him as his own son. His birthplace was called Ekachakra or Pure Ekachakra, which is now called Kaivara. [citation needed]

He distinguished himself from his brothers by his great stature and strength. His legendary strength is exaggerated throughout the work.

Of all those who fight with a mace, there is no one like Bhima. Nor is there anyone who compares himself in the driving of elephants. In the fight, not even Aryuna is compared. And in the strength of his arms, it is equal to ten thousand elephants. Well trained and active, when he becomes bitterly hostile, his rage can consume the Dhartarashtras in an instant. Always furious, and strong of arms, he cannot be defeated in battle or by Indra himself.
