Italian and Polish: from the feminine form of the Late Latin name Bonus ‘good’. This was a traditional hereditary name in the royal house of Savoy, and in the 16th century it was taken to Poland by Bona Sforza, who married King Sigismund I of Poland. She was noted as a patron of the arts, and was instrumental in bringing the Renaissance to Poland. The name was also borne by a Pisan saint (d. 1207), and also by the first abbess of Rheims (d. c.680). In the latter case, however, an alteration by folk etymology from the Germanic name Bova may be in question.
