29 November 2017
Meaning of Bukhari Bukhari is an Arabic name for boys that means “one who comes from Bukhara”. Bukhara is a city and region in modern-day Uzbekistan that used to be an important city in the Turan region of the Persian Empire. Some important Islamic scholars come from this area, such as al-Bukhari (compiler of hadith), Avicenna (philosopher), and az-Zamakhshari (scholar). Bukhari most commonly refers to the compiler of hadith mentioned earlier, whose full name is Muhammad bin Ismail al-Bukhari, writer of al-Jami’ as-Sahih, which contains narrations from the Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings of Allah upon him and is the most reliable book of Islamic knowledge after the Quran. The word Bukhara may come from Bukhar, which means “great knowledge” according to the Dehkhoda Dictionary, and may be a reference to the fact that the city was a center of scholarship and teaching in the classical world. But this meaning is uncertain.
