French, also sometimes found in the English-speaking world: bestowed in honour of St Jane Frances (Jeanne Francoise) Frémiot (1572–1641). In 1592 she married the Baron de Chantal (a place in Saône-et-Loire, so called from a dialect form of Old Provençal cantal stone, boulder) and adopted his family name. After his death she became an associate of St Francis of Sales and founded a new order of nuns.
