Darren a masculine given name of uncertain etymological origins. Some theories state that it originated from a Gaelic surname meaning "burnt land or hill", or from an anglicization of the Irish firstname Darragh or Dáire meaning "oak tree". According to other theories, it is a variant of Darrell, which originated from the French surname D'Airelle meaning "of Airelle". Darren has several spelling variations including: Daren, Darin, Daryn, Darrin, and Darryn.

In the United Kingdom, its popularity peaked during the 1970s but declined sharply afterwards.

English: recently coined name of uncertain derivation. It may well have been an arbitrary coinage, or from a surname (of obscure origin). It seems to have been first borne by the American actor Darren McGavin (b. 1922). It came to the attention of the public as the name of a character in the popular American television comedy series Bewitched (made in the 1960s). In the spelling Darin, it is associated with the singer Bobby Darin (1936–73), who was originally called Walden Robert Cassotto and who chose the name he made famous from a telephone directory.
