Darwish is originally Turkish; and it's composed of two nouns: 1) "Dar" (which means, "House"), and "Wish" (which means, "Threshold"). So literally, "Darwish" means: "House Threshold" or "Threshold of the house," which Metaphorically, means a "Humble Person" that anyone can go over. In Sufism, however, the name "Darwish" is used to describe a "Whirling Sufi," or a "Sufi" who's in worldly denial as he's detached from the affairs of life. In Urdu, on the other hand, the name "Darwish" is pronounced "Dervish," and it means: "Beggar." The Name is a common Last name in regions that was once ruled by the Ottoman Caliphate State, which include: Turkey, today's so-called Middle East, and across the Muslim World.
