The name Fonda is a nickname for one of the young musicians (all males) in Josef Skvorecky's novel The Cowards (Penguin, 1972) - about growing up and being in love with jazz and girls in the Czechoslovakia of 1945. One youth is called Jindra, short for Jindrich (Henry) and another, Rosta, short for Rostislav but the writer doesn't reveal Fonda's full given name. I wonder if it might be related to Alphonsus..just saying. Kevin H
