Welsh: of uncertain origin, derived from a British name that first appears in a Greek inscription in the form Gerontios, possibly influenced by the Greek vocabulary word gerōn (genitive gerontos) old man. The story of Geraint (or Gereint), son of Erbin of Cornwall, is told in the Mabinogi. Geraint is one of the knights of Arthur's Round Table. He wins the love of Enid at a tournament, and marries her. He is infatuated with her to the point of neglecting all else, but comes to suspect her, wrongly, of infidelity. By her submissiveness and loyalty, she regains his trust. The story of Geraint and Enid was used by Tennyson in the Idylls of the King. In recent years the name has become extremely popular in Wales.
