Scottish and English: transferred use of the surname, originally a local name from Gledstanes in Biggar, so called from Old English glæd kite + stān rock (the final -s is a later addition). As a given name it has been adopted in honour of the Victorian Liberal statesman William Ewart Gladstone (1809–98).
