Herbert is a Germanic given name, from hari "host" and beraht "bright". See also Heribert, another given name with the same roots.

English, German, and French: of Continental Germanic origin, introduced to Britain by the Normans. It is composed of the elements heri, hari army + berht bright, famous. A form of this name (Herebeorht) existed in England before the Conquest, at which time it was replaced by the Continental form introduced by the Normans. This gave rise to an important surname. The family were earls of Pembroke in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the poet George Herbert was a member of the family. By the end of the Middle Ages Herbert was little used as a given name, and its greater frequency in Britain from the 19th century onwards owes something to the trend for the revival of medieval names of Germanic origin and something to the trend for the transferred use of surnames.
Variant: German: Heribert.
Cognate: Dutch: Harbert.
Short form: English: Herb.
Pet form: English: Herbie.
