Horst is a male given name found mostly in German-speaking countries.

Low German: apparently from the vocabulary word horst wood, wooded hill (cf. Old English hyrst, which lies behind the many English placenames in -hurst). It is not clear why this should have given rise to a given name; an alternative suggestion is that it may derive from the Old Saxon personal name Horsa ‘horse’, altered by association with the related Hengist ‘stallion’. (Hengist and Horsa were 5th-century leaders of the first Germanic settlers in England.) The name Horst is first recorded in the 15th century; it is now quite common throughout the German-speaking world.
