Kedarnath is a Hindu holy locality located in the state of Uttaranchal, in India, at about 3580 m altitude, near the head of the Mandakini River, surrounded by snow-capped mountains. It is a nagar panchayat (municipality with more than 30 000 inhabitants and less than 100 000, although Kedarnath is an exception, since it only has 500 inhabitants and is not even accessible by road) in the district of Rudra Praiag. It is a sacred place for two main reasons. The first is the most remote of the four Chota Char Dham ('little four dwellings'). And second, in this place is the temple of Kedarnath, one of the twelve yiotir-linga temples consecrated to the god Shiva, which is located further north.
