The immediate source is the town in South Africa, the scene of fighting during the Boer War, which brought it to public notice at the end of the 19th century. The town was named after a certain Lord Kimberley, whose ancestors derived their surname from one of the places in England called Kimberley. The first part of the placename derives from various Old English personal names; the second (from Old English lēah) means ‘wood’ or ‘clearing’.
