Macarena is a name whose origin is unclear. There are those who relate it to a Greek origin, of makarios, which means "happy, blissful"; while there is more evidence of the Andalusian origin derived from the neighborhood of Seville with that name. This in turn takes its name from the Arch of the Macarena, one of the gates of the old wall of Seville, which was originally called in Arabic Bab-al-Makrin, from where the current name has derived; this also gave name to the basilica of La Macarena nearby and by extension to the image of the Virgin that is guarded there. Modern Andalusian names have commonly derived from Marian advocations (see RocĂo, Araceli), so this other origin is quite likely.

Although it may seem the opposite, it is the basilica that receives the name of the arch and not the other way around.
