French: apparently first used, in the Provençal form Mireio, as the title of a verse romance by the poet Frédéric Mistral (1830–1914). The name is probably a derivative of Provençal mirar to admire (cf. Miranda), but the poet himself declared it to be a form of Miriam; this was in order to overcome the objections of a priest to so baptizing his god daughter with a non-liturgical name.
