Moses or Moshe is a male given name, after the biblical figure Moses.

According to the Torah, the name "Moses" comes from the Hebrew verb meaning "to pull/draw out" [of water]. The infant Moses was given this name by Pharaoh's daughter after rescuing him from the Nile (Exodus 2:10). Some scholars have suggested that the name was derived from the Egyptian word for "son" rather than from Hebrew.

Biblical: English form of the name of the patriarch (Moshe in Hebrew) who led the Israelites out of Egypt (Exodus 4). His name is thought to be of Egyptian origin, most probably from the same root as that found in the second element of names such as Tutmosis and Rameses, where it means ‘born of (a certain god)’. Various Hebrew etymologies have been proposed, beginning with the biblical ‘saved (from the water)’ (Exodus 2: 10), but none is convincing. It is now mainly Jewish, and has always been tremendously popular among Jews. Up until the 20th century, however, it also enjoyed some popularity among Christians in England, especially among Puritans and Nonconformists.
Cognates: Irish Gaelic: Maois. French: Moïse. Jewish (Yiddish): Moishe.
