Myra /ˈmaɪərə/ is а female given name in the English-speaking world. The male equivalent is Myron.

The name was created by the 17th-century poet Fulke Greville 1st Barone Brooke (1554–1628). He possibly based it on Latin myrra meaning "myrrh". Myrrh is a fragrant resin obtained from a tree.

The name may also mean Margaret, as it can be the anglicized version of Mairead, the Scottish version of that name.

It is distinct from "Mira" which has a different origin.

English: invented in the 17th century by the poet Fulke Greville (1554–1628). It is impossible to guess what models he had consciously or unconsciously in mind, but it has been variously conjectured that the name is an anagram of Mary; that it is a simplified spelling of Latin myrrha myrrh, unguent; and that it is connected with Latin mīrāri to admire or wonder at (cf. Miranda). In the Highlands of Scotland this name is now sometimes used as an Anglicized form of Mairead (see Mairéad), being almost identical in pronunciation with it.
