Núria is a feminine given name of Catalan origin of toponymic meaning that alludes to the valley of Nuria (cat. Núria, geographically and etymologically linked to the Basque Norra, variant of Andorra) located in the Pyrenees, more specifically in the municipality of Queralbs (Girona). In this valley is the Virgin of Nuria, which has given rise to name many of the births of the area with the same name to honor the virgin, so the focus of diffusion began from there to the rest of the Iberian Peninsula.

Despite the vagueness in its Catalan origin, the name Nuria is already attested in the archives of the ancient city of Nuzi (modern Yorgan Tepe) from the mid-fifteenth century BC.C. It can also derive from the Hebrew word נוּרְיָא (Nurya), originally Nura, which in turn comes from the Aramaic נוּרָא nehiyr, which means "wisdom" (of God).

Catalan: from a title of the Virgin Mary, Nuestra Señora de Nuria ‘Our Lady of Nuria’. Nuria is a place in the province of Gerona, where there is a famous image of the Virgin. This was long venerated as a ‘black madonna’, but cleaning in the 1940s removed the grime that had come from centuries of smoking candles, and restored the original bright colours.
