According to Hindu mythology, Prithú is an emperor (chakravarti), named in the sacred scriptures and considered an avatar (incarnation) of the god Vishnu. He is also called Prithi and Vainiá (literally, 'son of [the king] Venah').

Prithú is famous as the first consecrated king. Because of him, the Indians called planet Earth Prithuí (Singh, p. 1712). He is remembered mainly for the legend of his persecution of the earth goddess, Prithuí, who fled converted in the shape of a cow and finally agreed to deliver her milk, in the form of grains and vegetation for humanity. The epic Mahabharata (third century BC.C.) and the text Vishnu-purana describe him as an avatar of Vishnu (Singh, p. 1713).
