In Hindu mythology, Ravana was the king of the raksasa demons. Brother of Kubera the treasurer of the gods. His name first appears in the epic texts Ramaiana and Mahabharata (both from the third century BC.C.).

Rávana is depicted with ten heads (meaning that he possessed great knowledge, expanding in the "ten directions") that earned him the name daśamukha ('ten faces' or 'ten mouths'), Daśagrīva ('ten necks') or Daśakantha ('ten throats'). He is also depicted with ten pairs of arms (meaning he could do the work of ten men).

Ravana was the son of the sage Visravas and Princess Asura Kaikasi (or Keshini, according to the Bhagavata-purana). Her father, the rakshasa Sumalin, wanted her to marry the most powerful human being in the mortal world, in order to produce an exceptional heir. He rejected all the kings of the world because their power was less than his own. Kaikasī searched among the sages and finally chose Visrava, who warned him that since she had approached him at an inappropriate time, he would have an evil son. However, she agreed. Thus, Ravana was born half asura (The asuras are corrupt, ambitious deities, who mostly seek evil) and half Brahmin (translation: a sage, saint).

His abduction of Sita (Rama's wife) and his death at the hands of Rama are the main facts.
