The name Tancred is a scholarly form of the anthroponym Tankrad or Dankrad, based on the Latin Tancredus, formed from the Germanic elements danc "thought" and rad "council".

It is not widespread. Fallen into disuse before the end of the Middle Ages, Tancred eclipsed its customs before returning to fashion in the nineteenth century, then falling back into disuse in the twentieth century and returning to fashion in the twenty-first century.

This name will be introduced in the eleventh century in the south of Italy by the Normans.
