The cult of the god Vasudeva is historically one of the earliest forms of worship in Krishnaist Vishnuism (which worships the god Krishna as the origin of Vishnu) and Vishnuism proper (which worships Vishnu as the origin of Krishna). It is believed to be an important tradition of the early history of the worship of the god Krishna in ancient times.

This tradition is considered separate from other traditions that merged at a later stage of their historical development. Other separate ancient traditions known today are the cult of Bhagavat (God as Lord) and the cult of Gopala (God as shepherd child), which -together with the cult of Bala (God as baby)-form the basis of the current tradition of Krishnaism (the monotheistic religion of Krishna).
