English: from an Old English personal name composed of the Germanic elements wil will, desire + frid, fred peace. This name was borne by two saints. There is some doubt about the exact form of the name of the more famous, who played a leading role at the Council of Whitby (664); it may have been Walfrid ‘stranger peace’ or ‘peace to the Welsh’, from Old English walh stranger, Welshman. Wilfrid the Younger was an 8th-century bishop of York. The name was not used in the Middle Ages, but was revived in the 19th century, and enjoyed great popularity then and in the first part of the 20th century.
