First name "Yurek" is very popular in Poland. Its is short pet name/nickname from JERZY. Dont ask my why this way - just any one there, who is bearing official first name "JERZY" traditinally is called in Poland (by centuries) - exactely "YUREK" (correct spelling in Polish is "JUREK", but pronunciation is YUREK) As far as I know it is an old Turkish word meant "Heart" and "Courage".
