Biblical: name (from a Hebrew word meaning ‘shade’) of one of the two wives of Lamech (Genesis 4: 19). The name was taken up in the first place by the Puritans, and again by fundamentalist Christian groups in the 19th century, partly because Zillah is only the third woman to be mentioned by name in the Bible, and her name was therefore prominent to readers of the Book of Genesis. She is not remarkable for any special qualities of character. Adah, the name of Lamech's other wife, may in part lie behind Ada, which was also a popular 19th-century female name.
