Russian: from the Late Latin name Natālia, a derivative of Latin natālis (diēs) birthday, especially Christ's birthday, i.e. Christmas; cf. Noël. St Natalia was a Christian inhabitant of Nicomedia who is said to have given succour to the martyrs, including her husband Adrian, who suffered there in persecutions under Diocletian in 303. She is regarded as a Christian saint, although she was not herself martyred.
